She always loved snowflakes, so it only seemed right that snowflakes were a part of her wedding day. Snowflakes were on the invitations and the program, on the centerpieces and the gift coasters, on the aisle ribbons and the gift card box, even on the greeting table at The Pines when we came to the reception. Of course, there was also the enormous snowfall that hit our town in the two days leading up to her wedding. There were lots of snowflakes. The day was picture perfect, like a Currier and Ives etching. Not the kind of day most brides seek out. But then, Rachel really loves snowflakes. When Rachel's father walked her down the aisle, not just the weather stole my breath away. The bride was stunning in her snow-white dress with crimson piping. A few months back, I asked Rachel what her dress looked like. The gorgeous blonde blushed becomingly and said, "It's a surprise. Only Mom has seen it." I couldn't help pulling her to me, this "niece" I so love. Rachel's mom and I are like sisters. We worked together as teachers before I had kids. As a matter of fact, Rachel and her mom were standing by my hospital bedside the day my contractions began in earnest. My firstborn came seven weeks early, that Saturday over 17 years ago. Rachel's innocent smile was a huge boost of morale that day.
