It doesn’t happen often, but every once
in a while a young bride will bring her mother’s delicate veil into Barbara
Ocone’s bridal boutique with plans to wear the veil in her own wedding – and as
Ocone examines the veil, she looks for (and sometimes finds) a small,
hand-crafted label that reads Custom Creations – a label that takes her back to
her first days as a bridal expert.
Barbara Ocone, or Mrs. Ocone as everyone
calls her, has owned and operated Ocone’s with her husband for 30 years along
Fort Worth’s Camp Bowie Boulevard. And though the store today is stuffed with
wedding and bridesmaids’ gowns – all hand chosen by Mrs. Ocone – in more than
5,000 square feet of space, it all started when she was a young Air Force wife
stationed in El Paso.
“When we were first married, he was an
Air Force pilot and me, always being a creative person, I needed something to
help me pass the time so I learned to make hats,” said Mrs. Ocone, while
sitting at a simple glass table surrounded by sparkling tiaras at her shop.
“Not only hats, but also small veils for bridesmaids.”
